HELP WITH SCHOOL MUSIC

Trinity Guildhall syllabuses at an appropriate level may be employed for the practical component in school (SQA) music exams such as Standard grade, Higher, and Advanced Higher.

The guitar may be a ‘stand alone’ instrument where no accompanist is required.

HOW TO REQUEST LESSONS AT MANNOFIELD...

First of all, click here to CHECK AVAILABILITY

If there is an available slot, use the navigation menu above (Contact Bill Mann) to request lessons. Email your request with any relevant details, age of student, type of guitar (classical, electric, acoustic) etc. Please include your telephone number. You will receive an automatic reply. Please do not email if there are no available slots advertised.

If you are subsequently offered a booking over the telephone for an initial lesson then you will be asked for your home address. An information letter for the appointment including details of where to attend will be posted to you. Please allow at least a week to arrange an initial lesson.

Prospective pupils are accepted subject to approval.

Dr Mann reserves the right to cease lessons.

Requests for lessons must be from the students themselves  unless they are under 18 years old, in which case the enquiry should be from a parent.  There are NO bookings for 'surprise gifts'.

The fee-payer must be at least 18 years old.

                 TRINITY COLLEGE LONDON

For students who wish to work towards external grade exams, Trinity Guildhall syllabuses would be my preferred choice. There are Finger-style (classical) and plectrum syllabuses (includes electric).

Click 'Music Grades' on the main menu for more information. There is a link to the Trinity Guildhall website where you can find details about grade syllabuses, exam fees, etc.

Music Grades are NOT compulsory.

GUITAR TUITION AT MANNOFIELD

FEES FOR GUITAR TUITION AT MANNOFIELD

The initial consultation is payable at the end of the lesson.

 From August 2011...

FEES for SENIORS aged 18 years and over= £21.00

FEES for JUNIORS aged under 18 years old = £16.70

The fee-payer must be at least 18 years old.

No extra fees and no obligation to book further lessons.

However, for regular lessons (on a weekly basis), an agreement would be made on the second lesson that tuition at my home would be paid one lesson in advance.

Therefore, a one lesson deposit would be payable along with the usual fee on the second lesson. The deposit simply ensures payment in the circumstance of non-attendance for a booked lesson due to negligence. In such a case, a deposit would be required to re-commence lessons.

No charge is applicable if at least 24 hours notice of cancellation is given, and there is no charge in the event of verifiable illness.

If no lessons are missed then the deposit serves as advance payment for the final lesson, regardless of the number of lessons, and regardless of any intervening adjustment in fees -

THERE IS NOTHING TO PAY ON THE FINAL LESSON.

Group lessons are not offered.

Each beginner student is a unique individual with his or her own cognitive and physical attributes.

Lessons are not the same thing as 'ensemble' work where participants have reached a certain level of performance.

Lessons (subject to availability) are on a one-to-one basis.

Juniors to Adults... Beginners to Advanced...

The youngest students eligible for lessons will be in the class of P5.

A parent/guardian must be in attendance for junior students.

One parent/guardian to observe quietly during lessons. No other children may attend. Lessons take place in a private residence.

There is no upper age limit -

ADULT BEGINNERS ARE WELCOME.

Weekly lessons are a minimum of 45 minutes duration plus 5 minutes free changeover time between students to unpack/pack, tune-up etc., giving a 50-minute visit

For students who have already obtained a guitar, any type of guitar may be used initially. However, the Spanish or Classic guitar is  recommended  for the scope it offers ergonomically, musically, and for acquiring techniques. The Classic guitar can be played with fingers (polyphonically) or with a plectrum. If you are thinking of acquiring a guitar see the page entitled 'Ergonomics for Beginners' for points to consider. Use the navigator menu located at the top right of this page

Students must have their own instruments.

Students must be self-motivated and want to play guitar.

The content of lessons is limited only by the student’s knowledge and/or ability at a given time. Whilst elementary ‘chord-strumming’ is included in lessons, the guitar will be taught as a musical instrument. I would recommend a suitable tutor book for you to purchase and loan you a copy of my own book (a work in progress for future publication) on the second lesson. See below for details of fees, how to book etc.

Pieces and scales from the Trinity Guildhall syllabuses may be incorporated for general tuition purposes and to afford the student the opportunity to be able to sit an exam at a later stage if the student wished to do so. Exams are not compulsory.

You would be required to purchase any books for use in lessons.

Enthusiastic (beginner) students on 4-string Bass Guitar may be considered if they are unable to find a tutor (not accredited). Preference would be given to Guitar students because that is the instrument for which an accreditation (Licentiate Teachers' Diploma) is held.
